Tim asked about Web414.com pulling in links of interest to the group from del.icio.us, so I created a del.icio.us user named "web414" and put the feed in Drupal's aggregator.
So now if you are a del.icio.us user and tag things with for:web414 they'll show up in the aggregator about an hour later...
So if you've got links of interest to the group, tag em!
I've added the Advanced User Module to Web414. Mainly because I started seeing a few new spammy accounts being registered, and rather than have to approve all new registers, I just want to be notified of new registers (all admins should get an email when a new user registers.) If you are an admin, and see a spammy user profile, please delete it, or let me know.
The Advanced User Module also has a few other features we may want to use, such as group notification, etc.
The REV. Lady has started up meetup groups
Thought everyone should know.
First off, a big thanks to C2 Graphics Productivity Solutions (and Chad!) for coming through last minute and getting a projector so Jeramey could do his presentation on folksonomies and online photo sharing services. Jeramey gave a good overview of how he uses Flickr and talked about features he uses and features they are lacking. (Zooomr was the other photo sharing site he mentioned.)
We also discussed BarCampMadison and we're happy to report that Web414 will be a sponsor of the event.
It also looks like next time we will be meeting at MSOE, so keep an eye out for the March 2007 meeting details. We should have more space and a projector at MSOE. As for the subject of the next meeting, we probably won't have a presentation, but we'll be discussing what happened at BarCampMadison.
It seemed that there was some more interest in people getting together to cowork weekly. Currently we get together on Mondays at 7pm at Espresso Christoph (by UWM).
What are you looking for out of a coworking session? What days and times are good for you? What area of town are you hoping to cowork?
Jordan and I meet by UWM as I live 10 minutes from there and he currently goes to school there, so that is the most convenient for us.
Must have's for a coworking venue:
Anyone else have any non-negotiables?
Let's make this more successful and helpful for the web414 community. It's great to share industry news, get help on some ideas or bugs you've run into, and to just generally socialize with people (because meeting only once a month doesn't satiate your geeky appetite!)
Jordan is working with MediaTemple to fix a bug that is preventing us from installing modules, but once that is finished I would like to put together the organic group modules so we can have a calendar for events.
Hey group, we touched on Web414 sponsoring BarCampMadison at the last meeting, but our deadline for this will be the February 8th meeting. If you are interested in pitching in a few bucks, I think we can be a sponsor, which would be a nice way for us to help support the BarCamp movement, and spread our name a bit.
How much? If 10 of us can pitch in at least $10, we can be a sponsor. Remember, BarCampMadison is free to participants, so $10 for a great un-conference like BarCamp seems like a great deal to me.
If you are willing to donate, please let me know, or just bring your wallet to the February 8th, 2007 meeting. Thanks!
Oh, and if you work for a company that would consider sponsoring BarCampMadison, please get in touch with Ken Rheingans.
We got off to a late start, so John started his talk on web publishing and the niche he's found. Part way into it Justin showed up and had a projector with him, so we started showing John's slides and walking through december.com.
We spent most of the meeting discussing web publishing and didn't really get to go around the room and meet the newcomers. We'll have to make sure we save time for introductions next time around.
Also, if anyone else can get a projector for the meetings, it would help, as Justin isn't sure he can always get one.
I'm not sure what we have on the agenda for February 2007, maybe we'll keep it that way and just go with an open discussion. (Of course there's always BsrCampMadison to talk about.)
Web414 Meeting — Thursday, February 8th, 2007 — 7pm
IT Fusion Business Center 633
We'll be at the IT Fusion Business Center again. Besides discussing BarCampMadison (which is happening March 3rd & 4th, 2007) Jeramey will give his talk on photo sharing sites, which he originally planned for BarCampMilwaukee, and Kris would like to discuss metrics people use to measure site effectiveness.
Stumbled across Coworking | Milwaukee a little while ago. Does everyone know about it? What level of interest does everyone have?
I, for one, am really interested in an affordable coworking solution. Currently we meet once a week by UWM at Espresso Christoph, but the attendance is low and we don't always get the "big table".
What do you look for in coworking? Pros and Cons? What days/times would be best for you? What side of the city are you on?
Also, a big thanks to Stratagem for being the location sponsor and covering half of the net connection fees.
Expect a planning meeting in the beginning of January, and after that promotion and planning will go into full swing. Let's make this as awesome (if not more awesome) than BarCampMilwaukee.
We're at Espresso Christoph on Downer again this week (upstairs!). So far I believe it is me, Jordan, and Brad.
Hope to see you there, as always :D
The first official Web414 meeting was last night, and it went well. It was the first time at the IT Fusion Business Center. (One thing we learned was that you can probably park on the street right out front, the meters are free after 6PM.) Justin said we can probably meet in this location until June. Jeramey said we could also use the MSOE Kern Center if needed.
Justin borrowed a projector, but long-term it would be nice to have a projector for the group, or at least a list of folks we could borrow one from. Chad was able to plug in his Airport Base Station and give us all a wifi connection.
We discussed the new group, and talked about how it would work (no specific leader, group effort, ad-hoc and BarCamp-like.) The site is running Drupal, and we would like to modify it (through modules) to match the features Meetup.com provided.
For the January 2007 meeting (and all future meetings) we're hoping to have a presentation on a specific topic. John mentioned talking about how he makes a living publishing information on his web site. It would also be nice to see guest speakers in the future as well.
Hey everyone! I will be at Espresso Christoph (map) tonight at 7pm if anyone is interested in coming by. I will be upstairs.
Hope to see you there!
