MilwaukeeDevHouse5 - Dec 3, 2010 - Bucketworks, Milwaukee, WI - web414.com

MilwaukeeDevHouse5Friday, December 3rd, 2010 — 5pm - Midnight

This will be the first MilwaukeeDevHouse with a purpose... In the past we just called it a "party with laptops" and invited you to come and work on whatever you wanted to. You can still do that, but we're also going to focus on ways to make BarCampMilwaukee (and Bucketworks) better.

Call it "Hack the BarCamp!" or maybe "Hack the Bucket!"

We're going to come up with ideas (crazy ideas are welcome!) about things we can do, processes we can put in place, technology we can deploy, that will help to make BarCampMilwaukee a better experience. Some of the things may be specific to Bucketworks, our venue host for the last five BarCampMilwaukee events, and a space many BarCampMilwaukee participants use for monthly meetups as well.

More details will follow on this, but we're pretty excited about the possibilities, and hope you can join us.

#web414 on freenode as a backchannel for MilwaukeeDevHouse?

Feel free to inhabit #web414 on freenode as a backchannel for MilwaukeeDevHouse. I'm one of surely many that cannot make it to the physical event but want to participate in some small way.

Let's make the best of it and see what we can do to pitch in remotely. This is the Internet after all.

Mike Putnam

In fact here's an idea to actually participate in coding!

I've setup a public Google Docs folder to remotely collaborate sort of real-timey on code ideas.

time

not being all night is going to make it hard to get there with enough time to be meaningful, but I'll probably just brave the rush hour traffic.

I'd love to carpool with anyone else from Madison.

Session wall idea...

It is unlikely that I can make the 12/3 DevHouse but here is my idea.

For the session wall....

What if, at "go time" (the moment presenters are encouraged to select
their time slot/room for their session) the paper they are given to
scribble their session onto has a unique random URL (maybe qr code as
well) printed on it. For example http://barcampmilwaukee.org/go?NN
where N represents any of [a-z 0-9]. These URL's would each resolve
to a wiki-style page that the presenter, attendees, etc could use to
post links to materials, questions, contact info, etc all specific to
that session.

Using a-z and 0-9 would give 36 x 36 = 1296 unique URL's for that
BarCamp.

This approach would require no "baby-sitting" by organizers. Just
a mention in the preliminary communications and at the opener.

An alternate version could be to assign the random unique URL's via
the web site session thingy, but then someone has to match up those
sessions (and papers with printed URL's) to persons at the actual
event.

I like it!

I like the tie between meatspace and our digital world. You could easily print out a few dozen sheets of paper with pre-assigned alphanumeric codes.

The papers could also include a space for presenters to write in a preferred hashtag for that session -- one of the issues with barcamp was finding a good way to group comments on twitter for that particular session.

Interesting

Hmmm, this is interesting... is the ultimate goal to make a connection between the piece of paper on the wall and a session page on the web site?

I do see how having a URL (and/or QR code, and/or short unique code) on each piece of paper could be a valuable resource.

I'd also like to see something where you could enter the codes (or capture the QR codes) and the web site builds your schedule for you. The schedule would/could tie to your account on the BarCamp site and show up on your profile page (with a nice mobile version.) That way you could see my schedule, I could see yours, etc.

online schedule

I've always thought an online schedule was the way to go with these things.

A giant tablet screen would be nice. I think something of that nature was used at BCMKE4, but having multiple remotes for people would be difficult.
