Web414 January 2009 IRC Log

There is usually an IRC backchannel at Web414 Meetings... Here's the log from the Web414 January 2009 Meeting. (Want more? See the whole thing!)

19:05 <joshjs> SO IT BEGINS
19:06 -!- web414 is now known as svdodge

19:06 <svdodge> @joshjs I've been stalking you since I came in.
19:07 <joshjs> I tried waving at you three times, but it was always in sync with you looking away. XD
19:07 <heygabe> Hey! Where's the logger.
19:07 <heygabe> Oh!
19:07 <heygabe> Hi logger!
19:07 <heygabe> Good To see you!
19:07 <joshjs> You suck, logger. Get lost.
19:07 <joshjs> Scram, kid.
19:07 <svdodge> Hi logger!
19:08 <joshjs> Don't encourage it.
19:08 <svdodge> Don't encourage you, @joshjs
19:08 <joshjs> I don't. I wish I could quit me.

19:21 <joshjs> I'm adding the link so I can remember to look at it when I read the chat transcript. If that happens.
19:21 * joshjs waves at his future self.
19:22 <ashe> ::imagines future joshjs reading through chat transcripts at 3am, drunk, with crazy hair::
19:22 <lectron> is there a vidstream tonight?
19:22 * lectron goes to look
19:23 <joshjs> @ashe I do have a bottle of absinthe I've been meaning to sample
19:23 <ashe> see
19:23 <ashe> i know these things
19:24 <ashe> btw it is FREEZING in here
19:24 <svdodge> it's so cold in here my metal laptop isn't even warming up. Boo.
19:24 <blissdev> should be wearing your coat ashe
19:24 <ddysart> or a scarf
19:24 <ashe> @blissdev it should be warmer than the arctic circle in here
19:24 <svdodge> or a hat
19:24 <blissdev> or both
19:25 <ddysart> maybe a skimask
19:25 <ashe> thats for later ,when i intend to rob you all
19:25 <ashe> just sayin
19:25 <svdodge> you don't scare me
19:25 <ashe> ha
19:25 <heygabe> WHo in Web414 is the leader in "prefaulting."
19:26 <svdodge> you, gabe
19:26 <joshjs> I like this guy
19:26 <svdodge> agreed. I'd like to see this groupcard in action. Sounds perfect for many uses
19:27 <heygabe> I will soon be offering pre-faulting services at ridiculously reduced rates.
19:27 <knellotron> he should have brought one in.
19:27 <joshjs> is there a prefault rate?
19:27 <joshjs> ::rimshot::
19:27 <heygabe> I used to just be an idiot, now I'm a professional pre-faulter..
19:28 <heygabe> Also @joshjs http://instantrimshot.com/
19:29 <heygabe> Also, @Ashe! Knit me some sleeves!
19:29 <ashe> @heygabe im knitting a blanket right now. seriously.
19:29 <ddysart> how do you knit a whole blanket, do it in sections?
19:29 <svdodge> @heygabe how did you leave the house and not have sleeves?
19:30 <ddysart> or huge long needles
19:30 <svdodge> @ashe Do you mind if we keep asking you questions so you can't keep knitting?
19:30 <ashe> this is actually a baby blanket. you can knit blankets in sections, yes, but there are needles that have a cable connecting them like this one :
19:30 <ashe> lol
19:31 <ddysart> how do you count that many stiches? I'd get halfway and forget wher I was at
19:31 <joshjs> @heygabe Thx for that. I'll put it to good use. :D
19:31 <ashe> i just keep knitting until i reach the end ^_^ i have the pattern memorised by this point
19:32 <heygabe> HOLY CRAP! I forgot how _huge_ Brad's laptop is!
19:32 <ashe> lol
19:32 <heygabe> LOOK AT THE SIZE of THAT GUYS laptop! ---->
19:32 <svdodge> I don't call that thing a laptop. It's a workbenchtop
19:33 <ddysart> mine too, I hate it
19:33 <joshjs> ::envy::
19:33 <ashe> littletinyfish had a huge lappy too
19:33 <joshjs> oh, he's trying to compensate for something
19:33 <joshjs> ::rimshot::
19:33 <ashe> lol
19:33 <ashe> he cant even defend himself!
19:33 <ashe> its so huge he left it at home
19:34 <joshjs> that mirror is conveniently placed. I can see all you naughty kids in the back.
19:34 <ashe> someone flip him off
19:34 <ashe> do eet
19:35 <ddysart> mustacheCamp!
19:35 <ashe> OMG we are so having a moustache themed party
19:35 <ashe> i know mathiasx is in on it
19:36 <ashe> its so happening
19:36 * joshjs wishes he got invited to moustache-themed parties from time to time.
19:36 <ashe> i think that for my birthday we should go out on the top
19:36 <ashe> town*
19:36 <ashe> in moustaches
19:36 <ashe> yes?
19:36 <ashe> youre all invited
19:36 <ashe> lets go
19:38 * joshjs waves.
19:38 <raste1> I hate Pidgin!
19:40 <wikibot> EHLO
19:40 <joshjs> ::rimshot::
19:40 <heygabe> sadtrombone.com
19:40 <ashe> lol
19:41 <wikibot> gabe's just upset cause hes been replaced by a machine
19:41 <ashe> this functionality annoys me
19:41 <ddysart> virality
19:41 <ashe> i block all applications people send to me
19:41 <ashe> sorry
19:41 <ashe> :D
19:41 <heygabe> GabeBot Segfaults. Almost constantly.
19:42 <raste1> Twitter is over capacity. Twitter still hates you.
19:42 <heygabe> Ficlets hates you more.
19:42 <ddysart> @ashe no wonder why you never joind my mo war
19:42 <svdodge> Twitter has been horrible, but I can't believe that it's CES's fault
19:42 <ddysart> err mobwar
19:42 <wikibot> dude im totally writing twitter for appengine
19:42 <raste1> it's Web414's fault
19:43 <wikibot> (not really though)
19:43 <heygabe> Gabebot Kernelpanics!
19:43 <wikibot> actually im writing a java application sever for appengine.
19:43 <joshjs> twitter hates me. it's really frustrating
19:44 <joshjs> @wikibot Good idea. Should be near trivial.
19:44 <joshjs> twitter, I mean
19:44 <joshjs> for app engine, I mean
19:44 <joshjs> hi
19:45 <svdodge> you ok there, joshjs
19:45 <ashe> hes already drunk
19:45 <ashe> preparing for the 3am binge
19:45 <douglasawh2> I like pidgin, what's wrong with it?
19:45 <svdodge> yeah, that 1 beer usually puts him in the "Easy and bumbling" category
19:45 -!- wikibot is now known as tronathan
19:45 <ashe> haha
19:46 <ashe> lets make him recite his abc's backwards1
19:46 <ashe> !*
19:46 <tronathan> I like pidgin too
19:47 <heygabe> Pidgin is not a good IRC client. Esepcially if you're old skool like teh r@ster.
19:47 <tronathan> I use pidgin for VPN
19:47 <tronathan> its not a very good vpn client
19:49 <raste1> I hate Pidgin cuz I tend to use a Mac and Colloquy, so I am used to having things "just work" and Pidgin makes me think every time I launch it... once a month at Web414 typically
19:49 <tronathan> Hows the sound on the ustream feed? Anyone remote?
19:49 <svdodge> I love it when someone rushes to the door to answer a phone call. Really people, it can't wait?
19:49 <ashe> maybe his wife is going into labor
19:50 <ashe> or his heart transplant just arrived
19:50 <ddysart> or the house is on fire
19:50 <svdodge> fine then, be that way
19:50 <ashe> and its calling him to let him know?
19:50 <joshjs> or he just got an awesome new phone
19:50 <joshjs> and that's his first incoming call
19:50 <ashe> stephanie swallowed an ipod and its having a party in her stomach
19:51 <ashe> ::dances::
19:51 <ddysart> so yummy
19:51 <heygabe> Not me!
19:51 <svdodge> oh my gosh
19:51 <ashe> omg
19:51 <ashe> i was gonna crack up if that was sam
19:51 <ashe> i was like "OH NO YOU DIDNT"
19:51 <heygabe> Quick DM Me Sam's No. and I'll call!
19:51 <svdodge> it's on my website, gabe
19:51 <svdodge> try me
19:51 <heygabe> I'm scared.
19:52 <ddysart> have some cake, gabe. it'll cheer you up
19:52 <heygabe> :(
19:52 <raste1> Facebook needs to give some money to Web414
19:52 <raste1> don't eat the cake! it's a prop!
19:53 <heygabe> Except the Web414 facebook app keeps segfaulting.
19:53 <ashe> i thought buying people was illegal?
19:53 <ashe> or is that only if you plan to lock them in your basement?
19:53 <ashe> i forget the rule
19:53 <heygabe> It's not slavery if you pronounce it "Venture Capital."
19:53 <svdodge> ah revenue
19:54 <ashe> HAHAH
19:54 <tronathan> heh gabe
19:54 <svdodge> @heygabe you're right
19:54 <ashe> thats cool
19:55 <tronathan> viral guilt... it trulyis the future
19:55 <ashe> no more kids at your door trying to sell wrapping paper or newspapers!
19:55 <ashe> woot!
19:58 <tronathan> sorry about the lack of audio on the ustream
19:58 <tronathan> i blame linux
19:59 <ashe> but linux is easy!
20:00 <ddysart> He should talk to the people at Twitter
20:01 <heygabe> Audio is overrated.
20:02 <heygabe> "S3 is like the Ocean. You just dump stuff you don't want anymore there."
20:03 <svdodge> I think I'm going to give up on cloud storage until I can get my hands on a decent uplink.
20:03 <blissdev> slicehost represent
20:03 <heygabe> Dropbox.
20:03 <raste1> Elias uses EC2 I believe... we should ask him
20:04 <ddysart> of crap, Gabe, I see the laptop you were referring to. Why not lug around an iMac?
20:04 <raste1> oh yeah, also I hate Pidgin cuz it likes to call me raste1 sometimes....
20:05 <heygabe> Oh Raste1! You're so silly.
20:05 <ddysart> you must have the r to 1 plugin installed
20:06 <ashe> OMG SO TRUE
20:06 * ddysart throws a sheep across the room
20:06 * joshjs throws a sheep at ashe
20:06 * heygabe threw a sheep at you!
20:06 * joshjs shakes his fist.
20:06 <svdodge> I feel like groupcard is probably one of the only FB apps that could viably work on FB.
20:07 <joshjs> Non-annoyingly, perhaps?
20:07 <tronathan> i make assertions about technology based on my feelings
20:07 <heygabe> @svdodge That and yoville.
20:07 <ashe> yay smutandeggs uses irc now ^_^
20:07 <ddysart> Maybe something based on Zombies. That sounds cool.
20:08 <ddysart> oh wait, that is false.
20:08 <smutandeggs> hi!
20:08 <blissdev> hi
20:08 <joshjs> hello
20:08 <svdodge> i
20:09 <svdodge> disregard that
20:09 <joshjs> I've found that developers who tell you how fast they are often forget to tell you how sloppy they are.
20:09 <joshjs> (I am one of these developers.)
20:09 * ddysart nods
20:09 <knellotron> woot, imagemagick.
20:11 * svdodge smiles now that he knows basic irc commands
20:11 <joshjs> wow, sam, I'd've guessed you were an irc guy
20:12 <svdodge> nope
20:12 <svdodge> i was too busy playing games or learning the ins and outs of any piece of software i could
20:12 <svdodge> or repartitioning harddrives
20:12 <svdodge> or fixing the computer so my parent's wouldn't yell at me
20:13 <svdodge> Break!
20:13 <blissdev> discussion about what?
20:13 <ashe> yer mother
20:13 <ashe> word
20:13 <ashe> to her
20:13 <joshjs> ooh, snap
20:13 <blissdev> maturity, ashe has it
20:14 <blissdev> :P
20:14 <ashe> i haaaaz
20:19 <smutandeggs> saddest cake is awesome
20:24 <the_screen> yay
20:30 <blissdev> whoa, laptop keep my seat warm
20:38 <raste1> ashe, I have a stupid phone... ask me later!
20:39 <ashe> @raste1 IM is your friend ^_^
20:39 <raste1> IM yeah, need to set up on the stupid Eee PC... all my tech is stupid :(
20:39 <ashe> :{
20:39 <ashe> meebo!
20:39 <joshjs> racerrick's kindle is neat. sorry for being mildly disruptive.
20:40 <raste1> PERL! everybody drink
20:40 <ashe> why wouldnt you use drupal?
20:41 <raste1> hello? PERL!!!!
20:41 <ashe> PFFT
20:41 <joshjs> YE SHALL NOT SPEAK ILL OF DRUPAL
20:41 <ashe> thats right
20:41 <ashe> we stone people for less than that, josh
20:41 <blissdev> no, you should look at it objectively
20:41 <raste1> I am re-writing Drupal in PERL
20:41 * joshjs ducks
20:42 * joshjs knows a developer sucks when they don't use source control.
20:43 <joshjs> also when they don't use drupal
20:43 * joshjs looks around for approval
20:45 <joshjs> yeah, I think you can tell by looking at it that code is bad. not necessarily that it's good, though.
20:45 <raste1> I am re-writing Joomla in Drupal
20:45 <ashe> @raster <3
20:46 <joshjs> yo dawg i herd you like drupal
20:46 <raste1> do i have the smallest laptop in the room?
20:46 <joshjs> the previous developer always sucked.
20:48 <blakehall> lots of drupal-love in here tonight... and I'm not even in the building ;)
20:48 <raste1> i am sitting next to the smart guy!
20:48 <ashe> @blakehall i just found a knitting pattern for a drupal hat ^_^
20:48 <blakehall> @ashe nice!
20:49 <raste1> I used to work at QuadGraphics
20:49 <knellotron> Jenny is knitting a hat right now.
20:49 <raste1> that's my disclaimer
20:49 <blakehall> @walkah has a legendary pair of knit drupal socks... there should be a pic on flickr somewhere
20:49 <knellotron> it's blue, but it's not a drupal hat.
20:49 <ashe> nice! im knitting a baby blanket
20:49 <raste1> I am hitting a gnat!
20:49 -!- web414 is now known as svdodge
20:49 <douglasawh2> hitting a gnat?
20:49 <ashe> i gnu that
20:50 <joshjs> who's the guy sitting directly in front of ashe?
20:50 <raste1> did anyone count how many people are here tonight?
20:50 <ashe> elias holman
20:50 <ashe> he owns distance software
20:50 <joshjs> is he on teh twitter?
20:50 <ashe> matty's boss
20:50 <ashe> yeah as distancesoft
20:50 <raste1> KeVroN is counting... he will remove his shoes and socks in a minute
20:50 <raste1> 45 he says!
20:51 <joshjs> follow'd
20:51 <raste1> largest Web414 turnout of 2009!
20:51 <heygabe> No, the other one was bigger.
20:51 <svdodge> darn cold killed my battery
20:52 <blakehall> either my acer sucks, or there's no audio from the ustream
20:52 <blakehall> there is some pete pearl-beard though
20:53 <ashe> byt the way
20:53 <ashe> littletinyfish looks crazy evil bald with that coat on
20:53 <ashe> he should have an eye patch and a sneer
20:53 <joshjs> developer mentorship would be a good topic for a future meeting
20:53 <blissdev> pair programming?
20:54 <svdodge> developer mentorship sounds like an awesome idea
20:54 <joshjs> I don't like pair programming, myself. I am interested in communication as it pertains to software development, mostly because I'm looking for ways to grow as a developer.
20:55 <joshjs> But pair programming as I understand it would involve too much human interaction. ;D
20:55 <lectron> at least a who-to-bug directory depending on what flavor of dev you do....for people willing to mentor
20:55 <blissdev> sometimes human interaction is a good thing for a programmer
20:55 <joshjs> heh
20:55 <blissdev> but that being said, i've never pair programmed :D
20:56 <svdodge> not that I'm struggling, but I think I'd enjoy having a dev mentor, even for the html/css/php/cms stuff I"m working on right now.
20:56 <joshjs> yeah, I know. I just think PP seems like too much. seems oppresive, and perhaps not cost effective for smaller projects.
20:56 <blakehall> I've found pair programming fairly useful at times... the MadRailers group has the occassional "Coffee N Code" session that sometimes fosters PP
20:56 <blissdev> yeah, i agree josh, but it depends how familiar you are with something
20:58 <joshjs> so you're thinking of it as more of a mentor/mentee dynamic?
20:58 <joshjs> (good word, "mentee")
20:58 <ttronathan> im trying to tie the idea of tests and writing good code back to "keeping it simple" or simplicity and simple toosl
20:58 <lectron> call 'em freshmakers
20:58 <joshjs> :)
20:58 <ashe> ^_^
20:58 <joshjs> sounds like she has somebody she wants to fire.
20:59 <smutandeggs> haha!
20:59 <ashe> or SET on fire
21:00 <joshjs> google has a really nice, simple tutorial for appengine. doesn't require much django or even python knowledge.
21:00 <blissdev> drupal: ruining developer everywhere
21:00 <blissdev> *developers
21:00 <ashe> why dont you like drupal, jordan?
21:01 <blissdev> i think drupal is good
21:01 <blissdev> i just don't think it's a cure-all
21:01 <heygabe> I am on the team that everybody hates.
21:01 <ttronathan> next months discussion: "Drupal is a cureall"
21:01 <ashe> dont be a hater, jordan
21:01 <joshjs> good name for a drupal branch, perhaps
21:01 <ttronathan> Except for loading a collection of nodes. I dont know why you can't load a node manager.
21:01 <ashe> we still love your little ruby-colored heart
21:01 <ashe> <3
21:01 <joshjs> "cureall," that is
21:02 <blissdev> ashe, i actually do a lot of stuff outside of ruby
21:02 <blakehall> @ttronathan "node manager" might be a worthwhile module... we should spec that out and write it
21:03 <ashe> @blissdev i know
21:03 <ashe> that doesnt mean im going to label you as something else though
21:03 <ashe> in the same way that we label pete the perl guy
21:03 <blissdev> pete is a hacker imho
21:03 <ashe> agreed
21:03 <blissdev> lots of different stuff
21:03 <ashe> but someone says perl
21:03 <joshjs> !
21:03 <ashe> we say pete
21:03 <joshjs> like, this year
21:04 <blakehall> hey, we're missing a python guy...
21:04 <blissdev> we really are
21:04 <heygabe> I can be the python (monty) guy.
21:04 <raste1> brennan will be teaching the class in social enginering
21:04 <raste1> whitespace... you nedsz it!
21:05 <joshjs> and goodbye, firefox
21:05 <knellotron> woot, lynx.
21:06 <joshjs> heh
21:06 <blissdev> goodbye firefox?
21:06 <ddysart> wow this chair is cold
21:06 <svdodge> I think the Firefox is an endangered animal
21:06 <joshjs> me too
21:07 <raste1> ddysart, i wish this stupid little laptop would get hot!
21:07 <blissdev> i disagree, but i guess i can see why you would be saying that
21:07 <blakehall> firefox is only endangered among the techy / early adopter crowd... maybe
21:07 <blakehall> it's market share is definitely going up before it goes down
21:08 <blissdev> yes
21:08 <blissdev> i've been trying safari as my developer browser, but i still feel as tho firefox has a stronger featureset
21:08 <knellotron> raster: "fork while fork" in perl. that should heat up your laptop.
21:08 <heygabe> I hate to admit it, but I've been using Chrome.
21:08 <joshjs> I don't need to validate my code. You can validate yours by letting me take a look at it, though.
21:08 <raste1> next meeting, Feb 12th, 2008 ... topics, to be determined ...
21:09 <raste1> er, 2009......
21:09 <joshjs> </dBag>
21:09 <raste1> or time travel to get there!
21:10 <ddysart> I'd second the second half discussion circle
21:10 <ddysart> like the format
21:11 <raste1> thanks everyone!
21:12 <heygabe> I'm not leaving until the logger leaves.
21:17 <heygabe> thank you.
