For the June 2010 Web414 Show (uh, Meeting) I am in need of a sidekick.
We'll be interviewing Todd Sattersten about the future of publishing, and while I'll be sitting in the captain's chair, I am in need of a second-in-command.
Sidekick duties include yelling loudly, making comments, laughing, and providing witty banter.
If you are up for it, reply here, or if you can do it in 140 characters or less, reply to @web414 on Twitter.
(We also need a camera operator, so if that's more your bag, let me know!)
We were happy to be back at the Chase Commerce Center (the location of BarCampMilwaukee4) for the November 2009 Web414 Meeting...
There was a great discussion about how you run your business (be it small business or freelancing) and how to deal with clients, getting paid, insurance (or lack of) and lot's of other things. This is always a hot topic, and one we're sure to revisit in the future.
Where will we be next month? Who knows? The ongoing TBD venue question is always exciting, no?
We love it when you come to Web414, we really do, but we know you can't always make it, heck sometimes we can't make it, but we try...
You probably know we have what we like to call a "Staff Photographer" in John December, and we thank him for his efforts, but hey, we welcome anyone to come and take photos, and share them with the world under an open license. It's all good...
While photos are a great way to document the show/event/meeting, whatever it is - we also love to broadcast it live to the world, and that's where you come in. You've probably seen that Gabe and I set up cameras and record the show, and we usually try to stream it as well, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, so we're looking for people to help with these tasks. Do you want to be in charge of a video camera? Moving it around, pointing it at things? Do you want to stream it live from your laptop so someone (besides Gabe!) can keep an eye on it? Do you want to follow the IRC channel for people not there, in case they have questions/comments? Do you want to bring some mics and give us actual audio for the stream watchers to hear?
We'd love for people to help out with these things... just show up, and let us know what you want to do, and we'll try to accommodate you, and thank you, and love you.
So... what can you do for Web414?
This photo illustrates the new format of Web414 for 2009. It's set up like a talk show. We've got a guy (heygabe) at a desk, and a couch next to the guy with guests... Gone is the podium and standing, we're kicking out a relaxed vibe now... We also need to add a countdown clock, and a few other features, but hey, we're putting on a show now! Oh, and on the far wall, those are photos by Simon McConico of Valo Photography, which were still up from the previous night's Spreenkler meeting at Bucketworks.
For the past few years, Bucketworks has been a gracious host for Web414 events, and a good supporter of our community, and we (in cooperation with Bucketworks) would like to continue to provide these great events at no cost to those who attend. In order to do this, we're asking you, the members of Web414 to consider becoming members of Bucketworks.
Membership is cheap! Starting at just $20 a year for students, and $40 a year for individuals. If you come to DevHouse, BarCamp, and the occasional Web414 meetings, that's a great value.
Bucketworks is good for Milwaukee, and has been a great partner of Web414, and we want to do even more in 2009, so help us out if you can.
We thank you for you support... and look forward to providing greatness in 2009 and beyond!
Yeah, it's on...
MilwaukeeDevHouse3 is Friday, November 21, 2008 at 6pm at Bucketworks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
We somehow managed to pull it off again, and BarCampMilwaukee3 happened without any unfortunate incidents, even though there was threat of desks being burned to the ground…
In the coming weeks I will try to follow-up on specific things about BarCampMilwaukee3, but for now I will just ramble on aimlessly…
Wifi seemed good and the internet connection worked. This probably sets a new record for Bucketworks.
We had a desk building competition (sponsored by Bucketworks) and I did not win, despite building two (yes two!) amazing desks…
Blake Hall and I (mostly Blake!) started working on the new BarCampMilwaukee web site & infrastructure. We should be done before BarCampMilwaukee4…
We’ll be discussing what worked/what didn’t and ideas for future *Camps in Milwaukee, including some sort of “FoodCamp” and DrupalCampWI2, and WordCamp, and others I forgot about…
Discussing where? At Web414 on Thursday, October 9th, 2008… 7PM at Bucketworks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin…
There's also a Friday night pre-BarCamp party event being planned that we need to spread the word about. Details should be available soon.
This is our 3rd BarCamp in Milwaukee (hence the "BarCampMilwaukee3" title!) and it feels like we're in the groove of getting these things up and running. This year seems so much more mellow than last year. I've been keeping an eye on registration, and I've seen some interesting people sign up. As of writing this we're at well over 100 people, and I'm guessing we'll see that shoot up in the next week, and get more people who didn't even sign up attending.
Remember to check out the proposed sessions to see what people are interested in doing. I'm pretty excited about the Hobby Robotics Make'n'Take Session and of course the The Future of Microblogging session looks amazing!
And have you see the shirt Mike Rohde designed? It incorporates tagging! How sweet is that?
(Cross-posted from RasterWeb!)
There is usually an IRC backchannel at Web414 Meetings... Here's a partial log from the Web414 August 2008 Meeting. (Show me the whole thing!)
(07:31:34 PM) iraster: I made it!
There is usually an IRC backchannel at Web414 Meetings... Here's a partial log from the Web414 July 2008 Meeting.
(07:46:09 PM) Video_Villain: the agreement: what you will and will not do
We've talked about the things created at the meetings being released under a Creative Commons license... but for a group effort like the above, how would we do that? Does each individual choose a license for their comments? Do we as a group, choose one, or does your use of the IRC channel act as compliance to a specific license of our choosing?
Folks, we need to put a drop in the bucket... and no, I'm not talking about water... we got plenty of that!
During the storm, things got a little crazy (see Flickr) and there is water everywhere. It ain't pretty. If at all possible, can you put a drop in the bucket? If you've ever attended a Web414 or a MilwaukeeDevHouse, it would be cool if you could chip in a few bucks to help our little clubhouse make it through this disaster. Bucketworks has been a gracious host to us, and it's a time of need for them, so put a drop in the bucket and let's hope it adds up enough to get everything back to normal.
Right now Bucketworks is closed. Until the damage is assessed, they can't open again. What does that mean for the June 2008 Web414 Meeting? We're not sure yet... we may have to move it, as well as other events scheduled there in the near future. Like I said, there's a lot of water...
Jenn has a post on bucketworks.org that tells more, so please go there and see what is up...

(08:52:20 PM) Ash1: butt shot! butt shot!
(08:52:55 PM) blissdev: tronathon: i would think that the app would need to break up your huge upload into pieces, and then determine how many of those pieces can be uploaded in a night

(09:14:45 PM) tronathan: the /wireless/ might need to be hardcore, but for pure packets.. i dunno. You would full the NAT tables on a home router, though.

We held a little event called "MilwaukeeDevHouse1" on March 14, 2008 at Bucketworks, where people came together to "party with laptops" as it were. The event was modeled after SuperHappyDevHouse which originated in the Bay Area.
So what happened at our little DevHouse? People hung out and worked on... well, whatever they wanted to. At one point Jon Thoms, Master of Flash, asked me what we were going to work on, and we somehow managed to hook him up with two guys with a startup that needed some Flash component. Matt Pickard taught Jeramey about clipping paths. Tracy did some crazy photo manipulation project. Nikol did... I'm not sure, but she was there... 4braham planned out some crazy Twitter mashup idea. Mike and his son Nathan scanned in drawings and made a book. KeVroN discussed when not to use Drupal, and I strung a guitar.
Things were in full swing from about 7PM on, with about 30+ people at the high point. We had food and drinks (mostly provided by Web414 folks) and ended up ordering pizza and wings later in the night. There were many photos taken, and I even made a video.
(Jeramey is already planning MilwaukeeDevHouse2, so I guess we'll call MilwaukeeDevHouse1 a success.)
In the time since the first BarCampMilwaukee held in 2006, we've come a long way. The folks at Web414 have become a great force behind events like these. Web414 also helped sponsor BarCampMadison in 2007 and the recent DrupalCampWisconsin. Our next crazy idea is MilwaukeeDevHouse with MKEDH1 taking place March 14, 2008. (And hopefully BarCampMadison2 in April 2008.)
We've built quite the tech community here in Southeastern Wisconsin, and BarCamps in Milwaukee just keep getting better. People are sharing, learning, and making new friends along the way. Enjoy the video... and we hope to see you at the next big thing.
